Track II: Career Exploration
Career Choices Week: Corporate Finance & Accounting Panel
I recently attended a panel for professionals in the corporate finance and corporate accounting fields during Career Choice Week. The place was packed when I got there, so much so that they had to separate the entire event into two rooms. All three of the speakers had pretty interesting stories about how they got to where they are, but one thing I took away from their experiences is how much they bounced around from job to job. They all had jobs right out of college but it took a couple of years for each of them to find exactly what they wanted to be doing. The main point all three of them did seem to focus on in regards to the audience, as business students, was the importance of internships. It was discussed how it is never too early to start looking for internships, even if you are a freshman. Internships are one of the most important factors that future employers look at in workers who are just coming out of college. Most importantly, if you have an internship with a company for a year or two and perform at a very high level for them, there is a very good chance that you could have a job offer from them waiting for you as soon as you graduate from college. One thing I found a little humorous about the panel was that all three brought up the fact that when you first get a job, they will take a period of time to teach you everything you need to know for that job from the ground up. They said that you don't really use what you learn in school at your job, but rather you have the skills from that education to be successful. I hope that's worth $50,000 a year.
